Those of you familiar with the stories we cover here on Sword and Scale know all too well that there have been far too many cases of parents tragically murdering their own children. Whether it’s to get revenge on a partner or some other motive driving them, these stories are always the hardest to hear since children are the most vulnerable members of our society.
With that being said, today we will be covering another story of a father who thought the best way to exact revenge on his estranged wife and the mother of his children was to kill the twin babies the couple shared. Unlike stories we’ve covered in the past, however, this one has a remarkable ending.
Oklahoma City police were contacted by Michelle Forrells, claiming that her estranged husband, Leland Foster, had forced his way into her home on the afternoon of June 2, 2017. There, Forrells alleged that Foster had held her at knifepoint and threatened to killer her, as well as the two 3-month-old twins the couple shared.
The Ada News reports that dispatchers heard signs of a struggle and a woman screaming over the open line. Police were immediately dispatched to investigate.
Before police had a chance to arrive on the scene, a 12-year-old girl who had also been in the home at the time of the struggle ran to the home of Cash Freeman who lived nearby. The girl reported to Freeman that Foster had been attempting to drown the two babies in the bathtub, in spite of efforts made by Forrells to stop him.
Upon hearing these claims, Freeman quickly loaded up his revolver and went to investigate for himself. Inside the bathroom he found Foster attempting to harm the babies, just as the girl had reported. Freeman shot Foster twice in the back, killing him instantly and ultimately saving the lives of the two infants.
Freeman was questioned by police who arrived on the scene a short while later. He was later released.
Freeman told KFOR he does not feel guilty for taking Foster’s life because he feels it was his duty to protect the two infants Foster had been attempting to harm. However, Freeman fears that he may be in trouble for his quick thinking.
It will be determined by the district attorney whether or not they want to pursue charges against Freeman. As for the two infants, they were life flighted an Oklahoma City hospital and have since been released.
