A dispute over spilled sugar turned deadly in the evening hours of June 30, 2017. Tyreik Baldwin, 21, is believed to have killed his 77-year-old grandfather after the pair had a few squabbles throughout the day, including accusations of Tyreik spilling sugar around his grandfather’s house.
Police found the body of Harvey Baldwin inside of a chest freezer at his home in Blue Springs, Missouri. Another man had dispatched officers to the scene after he claimed his nephew, Tyriek Baldwin, had assaulted him. Baldwin had fled the scene in his grandfather’s truck before officers arrived.
Baldwin was later spotted driving down 1-470. The man led police on a high-speed chase, but not before using a family member’s stolen debit card to withdraw money from an ATM at a gas station in Lee’s Summit. Police were able to apprehend the suspect by using stop sticks to slow down his vehicle.
Within days of being taken to the Jackson County Jail awaiting trial for the murder of his grandfather, Baldwin was in trouble again. A female guard had been attacked by the man as she was escorting him to his cell. The guard was taken to the hospital after suffering bruising to her face from the attack.
“This news that we received is just another blow,” Baldwin’s aunt, Robin Gregory told Fox 4 KC. “Someone else now has been affected by, you know, whatever those demons are that have taken Tyreik.”
Baldwin is currently being held on a $250,000 bond. In addition to charges related to the murder of his grandfather, Baldwin has also received a citation for the attack of the guard.
